The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has joined the star-studded list of benefactors, including Michelle Williams, Baz Luhrmann, Rose Byrne, Liam Hemsworth supporting the prestigious Heath Ledger Scholarship for 2017 with a generous donation of US$5,000.
The Australians in Film Heath Ledger scholarship, named after the late Heath Ledger, which provides educational and financial support to a young and emerging Australian actor each year, includes US$10,000 cash, a two-year scholarship at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in Los Angeles; flights from Australia, USD$5,000 worth of visa and immigration services, $500 worth of Uber credit to get around LA and mentorship from some of the most successful Australians working in Hollywood as well as top American casting directors and dialogue coaches.
Under the guidance of scholarship patron and father of Heath, Kim Ledger, and with support from founding benefactors including Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and Naomi Watts, the scholarship is now in its eighth year and considered a barometer of the top acting talent coming out of Australia.
This year’s winner was Ashleigh Cummings, star of the Venice Film Festival-bound Australian crime drama 'Hounds of Love'. Previous winners have included Bella Heathcote, (Fifty Shades Darker), Cody Fern (The Tribes of Palos Verdes), Oliver Ackland (The Originals), Ryan Corr (Hacksaw Ridge), James Mackay (The Leftovers), Matt Levett (Wolf Creek) and Anna McGahan (House Husbands).
Kate Ledger, Heath’s sister and newly appointed board member of AiF, said today; “We are so grateful to the HFPA for their support of this very important scholarship.”
“Heath was a very generous spirit by nature and this scholarship is about providing not only career and educational guidance, but support on a deeper level for a young actor coming to Hollywood to try to find work. AiF, with the support of this HFPA donation will be able to provide a community of professional and personal connection, which is invaluable for anyone who knows Los Angeles.”
Heath Ledger won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight in 2009.
Australians in Film is a non-profit film, television and digital content foundation that supports and promotes Australian screen talent and culture in the United States.
The Heath Ledger Scholarship relies on the annual support of individuals, corporations and friends of Heath who contribute each year.
