Australian actor John Walton, who played the flirtatious Dr Craig Rothwell in the Australian 70s soap The Young Doctors, has died.

According to reports, the 62-year-old had suffered a long illness.

Walton's other credits include Sea Patrol, Cop Shop, The Sullivans, Home and Away, All Saints, A Country Practice and Blue Healers.

Cornelia Frances, who played Sister Grace Scott opposite Walton in The Young Doctors, paid tribute to late actor:

“He played the very handsome and naughty Doctor Rothwell,” she said. “We were like a huge family. Of all the handsome doctors he was the most popular. It’s so sad. He was such a beautiful man and a giver as an actor and a person. He was just one of the lovely people that you happen to meet and get on with. Everyone loved him. He didn’t have an enemy in the world.”

A memorial service for Walton will be held at 11am on Saturday morning at the University of NSW’s Fig Tree Theatre.
