Filming is underway in the UK on David Yates' action adventure Tarzan
The live-action blockbuster stars Aussie Margot Robbie alongside hollywood heavyweights Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood
), two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained
, Inglourious Basterds
), Oscar-nominated actor Samuel L Jackson (Pulp Fiction
) and Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond
Robbie, The Wolf of Wall Street's breakout star, is playing Jane opposite Skarsgård the title role of Tarzan.
The film is based on the iconic jungle hero created in 1912 by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, and is set years after the man once known as Tarzan left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.
A BAFTA-winning director whose credits include the final four films in the Harry Potter franchise, Yates is helming Tarzan from a screenplay co-written by Australian Stuart Beattie, Craig Brewer, John Collee and Adam Cozad. Filming is taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same studio where Yates brought Harry Potter to life, as well as on location around the UK.
Collaborating with Yates behind the scenes, the creative team includes Emmy-winning director of photography Henry Braham (The Golden Compass), Three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (Dangerous Liaisons, The English Patient, the Harry Potter films), Emmy-nominated editor Mark Day (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 & 2), and Oscar-nominated costume designer Ruth Myers (Emma).
The film is slated for release on July 1, 2016 by Warner Bros. Pictures, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.
It has been a busy year for Robbie who wrapped filming Saul Dibb's WWII drama Suit Suite Française in January and Craig Zobel post apocalyptic sci-fi Z for Zachariah in May.
The in-demand actor recently joined an impressive cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, and Matthias Schoenaerts in Italian director Luca Guadagnino's upcoming thriller.
The untitled film will see Robbie reunite with Schoenaerts, whom she worked with on Weinsten Co's Suit Francaise.
As Guadagnino describes it, the project is "a thoroughly provocative, glamorous, sexual, dangerous thriller. A journey into a relationship and love triangle where two men and their mutual obsession with a woman leads one to murder, the other into a forbidden tryst that will forever haunt him. This tense story is set in a unique and amazing place in Italy, and in a world of characters we so rarely have access to.”
The project will be the first English-language fiction feature from the Italian director, whose previous work includes I Am Love, staring Tilda Swinton.
Penned by thriller veteran David Kajganich (True Story, It), production is expected to commence in Italy in the summer.
