Perth-born comedian, writer, composer, singer, actor Tim Minchin is on board to co-direct DreamWorks' Larrikins
An animated musical comedy set in the Australian Outback, Larrikins was written by Australian writer Harry Cripps (The Magic Pudding
) and centers on a an uptight bilby living a sheltered life until one day he learns a dangerous secret that forces him to on an adventure across the outback.
While attending the opening of DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition at ACMI in Melbourne on Wednesday, Minchin said, “I want to tell a story about who we are as Australians...I don’t have a simple relationship with that question. I want to put that complexity out there... It’s very complicated multicultural multifaceted country. We have the chance to tell a big story.”
Minchin was originally brought on to work his musical magic on the film, but as he and Cripps reworked the story and added the music and lyrics, Dreamworks was so impressed with his vision that they also asked him to direct.
The UK-based Aussie has moved with his family to Los Angeles in order to focus on the project.
