Newcomer Mitchell Hope has been tapped for a lead role in Disney Channel's upcoming live-action TV movie Descendants
The film centres on the children of well known Disney characters.
Hope is cast to play Prince Ben, the son of Beast and Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
The 19-year-old became a frontrunner for the role after he submitted an audition tape through his Australian agent, which prompted Disney to fly him out for casting sessions.
Judy Taylor, Disney Channel's senior vice president of casting and talent said:
"We were intrigued by Mitchell's natural acting style, boyish charm and winning personality and when we brought him to Los Angeles to read opposite Dove, it was apparent that he embodied the inherent good nature of Ben and the sense of fairness that the character represents."
Hope joins Dove Cameron (Liv and Maddie), who has been cast to play Maleficent's daughter Mal.
Helmed by High School Musical director Kenny Ortega, Descendants will premiere on the Disney Channel in 2015.
This could be a break for the Melbourne-born actor, whose biggest role to date is playing young Tim Farris in Shine Australia's popular two-part TV movie Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS.
