Australian Nicky Whelan has landed the lead female role in Matador, a new US 13-episode drama for the El Rey Network.

Whelan will play a CIA agent opposite Gabriel Luna, who is cast to play the title role of "Matador".

Created by Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, Matador follows the story of Antonio "Matador" Bravo, a soccer star who uses his sporting career as a cover for his real job - a skilled assassinator for a secret branch of the CIA.

Production is expected to begin at the end of March, and the first episode is scheduled to premiere following the 2014 Soccer World Cup.

Whelan is one of Australia's most in demand actors. You can see her over the next 24 months in several film and television projects, including Brett Leonard's Australian
comedy Diamonds Down Under with Jack Thompson, and American comedies The Wedding Ringer lead by Kevin Hart and Josh Gad and James Widdoes Do it Yourself.

Whelan will also star in action thriller Left Behind with Nicolas Cage and Chad Michael Murray and Terrence Malick's drama Night of Cups starring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and fellow Australians Teresa Palmer Cate Blanchett, Isabel Lucas, and Jason Clarke.

Congrats, Nicky!
