Aussie actor/singer/comedian Tim Minchin has set his sights on a musical adaptation of the beloved 1993 film Groundhog Day.
Minchin, who has had enormous success on the West End and Broadway with his other production "Matilda the Musical," will pen the music and lyrics.
Minchin wrote in his blog:
"It seems that our wee secret has leaked: I’m working on a stage musical adaptation of the iconic and brilliant Danny Rubin script, Groundhog Day. Danny himself is writing the ‘book’, I’m writing music and lyrics, and Matthew Warchus (of Matilda fame) is directing.
The central conceit is perfectly suited to the theatre, in my opinion. In fact, I think many of its ideas could be enhanced by the stage. It has the potential to be complex, dark, visually fascinating, and thematically rich, whilst still being a joyous romantic comedy with cool tunes and lots of gags.
It’s certainly not an easy job, and I’m truly honoured – and genuinely excited – that Danny is letting me have a crack at it."
According to Minchin, Groundhog Day should be ready "in a coupe of years".
The Tony winning Matilda the Musical is expected to wow Australia next year.
