Jai Courtney is one of Australia's most in demand actors - the Sydney-born WAAPA graduate has been tapped to star in Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken
" and Russell Crowe's "The Water Diviner
In "Unbroken," Courtney joins rising Aussie star Alex Russell, as well as Jack O'Connell, Garrett Hedlund and Domnhall Gleeson on the cast.
Courtney is set to play WWII fighter pilot Hugh 'Cut' Cuppernell.
"Unbroken" tells the true story of Louis Zamperini, an American track star and second lieutenant in the US Army Air Force during World War II, whose plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean while on assignment.
Zamperini survived for 47 days in the Ocean before his raft was washed ashore the Marshall Islands, where he was captured by Japanese forces and held captive and tortured for two years.
O'Connell is cast to play Zamperini, Russell will play his older brother Pete.
Directed by Angelina Jolie, "Unbroken" will be shot in Queensland.
Universal Pictures has scheduled the movie for release in the U.S. on Christmas Day 2014.
"The Water Diviner," which will be Russell Crowe's directorial debut, is a post-WWI Australian drama set in 1919. The film tells the story of a father who travels to Turkey in search of his two sons who did not return from the Battle of Gallipoli.
Courtney is tapped to play Cecil Hilton - a Lieutenant colonel tasked with gruesome job of identifying the bodies of those killed in battle. Crowe will play the father, Connor.
With a script penned by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios, Crowe plans to shoot the film in Australia and Turkey and production is expected to begin later this year.
"The Water Diviner" will be produced by Hopscotch and Fear of God Films.
