Werner Herzog's "Queen of the Desert
" may have its leading man in Damian Lewis, Emmy and Golden Globe winning star of Showtime's drama Homeland.
Australian star Nicole Kidman is already attached to play the female lead.
”Queen of the Desert,” tells the story of Gertrude Bell (Kidman), chronicling her life as a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.
Lewis will play Lt. Col. Charles Doughty-Wylie, an English war hero who has an affair with Bell.
No stranger to playing real life characters, Kidman is coming off playing Grace Kelly in "Grace of Monaco" and Patricia Wallace, the wife of Eric Lomax (Colin Firth), a WWII prisoner of war in Jonathan Teplitzky’s "The Railway Man".
Production on "Queen of the Desert" is scheduled to begin in December.
