A future classic of Australian cinema, Ivan Sen's "Mystery Road," opens nationally across Australia today. Selected as Opening Night Film at the 2013 Sydney Film Festival, "Mystery Road" stars Aaron Pedersen as an Indigenous detective who returns to his hometown to solve the murder of a teenage girl.

Aaron is joined by a stellar Australian ensemble cast including Hugo Weaving, Ryan Kwanten, Jack Thompson, Bruce Spence, Tasma Walton, Damian Walshe-Howling and Samara Weaving.

Sydney Film Festival is supporting the national release, as CEO Leigh Small said: “Mystery Road was warmly and enthusiastically received by our Opening Night audience, drawing cheers and acclaim for good reason; it’s an important film beautifully made by a great filmmaker, that also makes for a thoroughly satisfying and entertaining ride.”

The critics are warmly enthusiastic too:

“Blown away by Mystery Road at the Sydney Film Festival. Powerful narrative and message plus a stunning performance by Aaron Pedersen. Mesmerising. Four stars” - The Guardian

“a thrilling shoot-out of which John Wayne would have been proud” - Screen International

"A deeply satisfying and slow-burning modern-day western" - SMH

“Ivan Sen’s outback thriller has a great deal going for it: spectacular widescreen photography, a very charismatic central performance, an intriguing plot.” – David Stratton, At The Movies

“Four stars” – Margaret Pomeranz, At The Movies
