American actress Rooney Mara has joined Cate Blanchett on the cast of "Carol"
. She replaces Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, who dropped out of the role.
Directed by Todd Haynes and a screenplay adapted by Phyllis Nagy's, Carol is a drama based on Patricia Highsmith's romantic novella "The Price of Salt".
Haynes said of the new casting:
“We’re over the moon to have Rooney on board. I’ve been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate onscreen is thrilling to say the least.”
Set in New York, "Carol" tells the love story of Therese Belivet and Carol Aird - Therese is a young shop assistant and Carol is her customer. They become friends and soon fall in love.
Blanchett and Haynes previously worked together on the Bob Dylan biopic "I'm Not There". Blanchett also has a history with Highsmith's work, having played Meredith in the critically acclaimed film adaptation of her novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
Mara and Blanchett are also set to share the screen in Terrence Malick's untitled drama to be released next year.
Filming on "Carol" is expected to begin in Spring 2014.
